WHO WE ARE

Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site serves as a museum of history, art, and architecture,
and a host to community organizations, educational programs, and special events. The Friends of Philipse Manor Hall provides entertaining and educational programming to engage local residents, encourage visitation, and foster support and appreciation for this unique site.

The Friends of Philipse Manor Hall was incorporated in 1996 for the support and enhancement of Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site in Yonkers, NY.  We strive to provide free and inexpensive activities aimed at fostering public interest in and support for Philipse Manor Hall, encouraging visitation, and promoting the site. In addition, The Friends of Philipse Manor Hall provides funds and volunteers for events organized by the Philipse Manor Hall site manager and staff.

The Friends of Philipse Manor Hall has completed two major conservation projects and hosts a wide array of events:

  • In 2000, the original 1750’s papier-mâché Rococo ceiling was restored as an official “Save America’s Treasures” project.

  • In 2002, cleaning and restoration of the 46 ft tall, granite and cast-bronze Sailors and Soldiers Monument in front of the manor hall was completed.  Unveiled in 1891, the monument honors the citizens of Yonkers who fought in the Civil War.

  • Past events have included music and lecture series, after school arts programs, holiday programs and guided tours, book signings, flower festivals, and historic recreations and demonstrations. In 2008, the FPMH celebrated the 250th wedding anniversary of Mary Philipse and Roger Morris by staging a re-enactment of the wedding, complete with period costumes, decorations, and music.

  • With the staff at PMH, the Friends hosts a number of ongoing programs include guided tours of the museum, rotating exhibits in the community art gallery, family movie nights, Saturday Yoga, colonial games days, and Jazz at the Manor.  Annual celebrations include Riverfest, St. Nicolas' Day, Presidents' Day, and Colonial History Week.
